Future food demands require 70% increase in farming production by 2050 due to the projected population increase to 9.7 billion people. Traditional farming consumes 14% of energy and 70% of water globally and it is unsustainable for the required production increase. Greenhouses are a solution (10X yield consuming 10X less water) but consume 10X more energy compared to traditional farming. Therefore, new technology is needed to meet the energy required by greenhouses to secure sustainable food supply without environmental damage.
Brite has developed nanomaterials technology for transparent solar glass for greenhouse and Agri-PV applications. Brite utilizes innovative materials and deposition techniques to deliver transparent glass that produces electrical energy from the sun, enabling greenhouse farmers to drastically reduce or eliminate their energy costs.
